Jim Butcher takes risks with Changes, his 12th Harry Dresden novel. Darker than usual, it lives up to the title. The risks pay off: This is undoubtedly Butcher's best Dresden book. Harry faces his worst enemies and battles his darkest internal demons to save a child whom he unknowingly has fathered with his ex Susan and whom the Red Court vampires have kidnapped to use in a blood sacrifice. From the first page until the last, Butcher literally never lets up on the suspense and action. He sweeps us gleefully along as Dresden calls together all his friends (and an enemy or two), uses all his wizard skills, and loses nearly everything to save his daughter. Butcher sets the stage for an epic battle, both physically and emotionally, and puts into motion transformations for Dresden that will shake up everything and everyone in his world.

Publisher Comments:

The new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series.

Long ago, Susan Rodriguez was Harry Dresden's lover — until she was attacked by his enemies, leaving her torn between her own humanity and the bloodlust of the vampiric Red Court. Susan then disappeared to South America, where she could fight both her savage gift and those who cursed her with it.

Now Arianna Ortega, Duchess of the Red Court, has discovered a secret Susan has long kept, and she plans to use it — against Harry. To prevail this time, he may have no choice but to embrace the raging fury of his own untapped dark power. Because Harry's not fighting to save the world...

He's fighting to save his child.

Review:

"The fast-paced and compelling 12th book in Butcher's bestselling series (after 2009's Turn Coat) is aptly titled. Beginning with the revelation that wizard detective Harry Dresden has a daughter, Butcher throws one high-stakes curveball after another at his hero. Harry's ex-girlfriend, Susan Rodriguez, discloses young Maggie's existence after vampire Red Court duchess Arianna Ortega kidnaps the child. Ortega holds Harry responsible for the death of her husband and is planning to offer Maggie as a human sacrifice. With a fragile peace in place between the Red Court and the White Council of wizards, Harry is unable to count on them for support in his rescue mission, and he must compromise almost everything he believes in to save his daughter. Butcher is deft at relieving some of the tension and grimness with bursts of gallows humor that keep readers coming back for more." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"After the cliff-hanger ending, readers will be clamoring for the next book. A can't-miss entry in one of the best urban-fantasy series currently being published." Booklist (starred review)

When we read a Harry Dresden novel by Jim Butcher, we know what we're going to get: it won't be the greatest piece of literature in the history of the written word, but it will be an entertaining, enchanting read. Butcher continues to develop his alternate Chicago, and spins a complex and engaging yarn that shows us the family side of Dresden, shows us how far he's willing to go to protect those he loves, and moves most of the major supporting cast around. Warning: the cliffhanger ending will leave you waiting impatiently for the next book in the series.

Glad to see this one made multiple lists. It is an ever increasing source of amazement to me that everyone of these books is better than the last. Butcher is amazing. Can't wait until March!

Almost everything that could happen to Wizard Harry Dresden has. This time he discovers he has a child, whom he must rescue and still lose again; gets his home and office destroyed; discovers his grandfather; almost gets something going with longtime friend Karrin Murphy; and then he dies. Or not. (And that's leaving out a whole lot of action, revelations and wizardry.) I can't wait to read what happens next.
