Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When The Wheels on the Bus, by Caldecott Medalist Paul O. Zelinsky, broke onto the scene back in 1990, it created a sensation with its clever characters, sly subplots, luscious colors, and the incomparable flair of its moving parts. Almost a million young readers have enjoyed the wheels that go round, doors that open and shut, and people who go bumpety-bump. Today it remains as fresh and engaging as when it was first published.

Review:

"[I]ngeniously designed, deftly executed....The text consists of the lyrics of the song itself, but Zelinsky has neatly inserted a number of visual subplots that flesh out the story..." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"[B]rilliantly designed and produced....The song...is a perfect choice for a pop-up, for the art and engineering are woven together seamlessly, and the book will lose little of its appeal after the moving parts have run their race." School Library Journal

Synopsis:

In this wittily illustrated, cleverly engineered book with moving parts, based on the popular play-rhyme, Zelinsky introduces all kinds of characters, slyly humorous subplots, and parts that go round and round, in and out, back and forth, up and down. Full color.

This is a phenomenal pop-up book, definitely the best for kids I've ever seen. It takes the wheels on the bus song (currently my two year old's favorite tune) and illustrates it with creative, fabulous art and moving parts. It is my son's favorite book at the moment, and I can see it working for a range of ages. A really great gift idea- I'm going to be giving this at birthdays for awhile.

Calling this a "pop-up" book doesn't do it justice. It is BY FAR the best one I've ever seen. My own children (now nearly grown) LOVED it and I've given it as a gift many times. It is a perfect 2nd birthday present. Alternatively, you can present it to new parents with instructions to wait until their child is around 18 months.

Don't be put off by the relatively expensive price - this book is WORTH IT. Among other things, it is extremely sturdy. Your kids may use it so much that you have to buy a second copy, but you will NOT feel cheated.

The book takes the simple "Wheels on the Bus" song and turns it into an extravaganza of motion and humor. The wheels on this bus really DO go 'round and 'round, and the door opens and shuts, etc. But then there are wonderful touches, such as the babies not only go "wah, wah, wah," but their parents' eyes roll towards the heavens while the babies cry! Just the kind of thing to keep adults - and older kids - amused.

The reader can make up stories about the various characters and locations that appear. The illustrations are simultaneously simple and detailed, so a very young child can understand what's happening, while adults and older children are rewarded by the richness and hidden complexity of the drawings.

This is a great book for kids. My mom bought it for my son when he was about two years old. He loved this book. It was a big favorite. Since he loved it so much it was necessary to buy another copy after ours got tattered from much reading and interaction. We are currently on copy number two and I am going to buy copy number three because my 2 1/2 year old daughter is in love with the story and the moving parts. She plays with the book by herself and requires it be read to her before bed every night. Hers is in bad shape due, again, to lots of interaction.

This book is well made, but my kids repeatedly play and 'read' it to one another. My favorite thing about the book is the under stories. I am sure there is a literary tern for it, but I don't know it. Every person riding the bus has a story. There are stories that take place on every page in which the characters aren't even on the bus. Rather you can observe their movements from the windows. Even after reading this book many times It's still fun because some times I'll read the story to my son ( 5 years old) and only tell a made up story of one of the additional characters.

This is the only children's book that has been purchased more than once in my house and all three times, it has been worth the money. It't fun because some times I'll read the story to my son ( 5 years old) and only tell a made up story of one of the additional characters.
