The quotes and brief biographies in Americans Who Tell the Truth are a perfect introduction to begin discussions with children about patriotism, truth, and integrity. Some of America's most memorable and admirable historical figures, from a broad range of society, including scientists, writers, activists, and musicians, are represented. Great for personal libraries and classrooms.

Publisher Comments:

As we in the United States have the right to speak the truth, we also have theneed to be told the truth. Throughout history, politicians, writers, environmentalists, political activists, and others have used this freedom to motivate and empower Americans to challenge the status quo. Artist Robert Shetterly's fifty portraits, combined with thought-provoking quotes and concise biographies, offer a powerful view into what it means to be American, to hold American values, and to be part of a democratic society. Included are Frederick Douglass, Rachel Carson, Chief Joseph, Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez, Mark Twain, Woody Guthrie, and more.

This book, this project, is very timely and powerful. I just saw Robert Shetterly in person with about 15 of his portraits of Americans Who Tell the Truth. The portraits are first rate, and the quotes, scratched into the paint, very moving and inspiring. This is his response as an artist to the political shenanigans after 911. But it isn't about 911. It is his search and discovery of the people throughout our history who where courageous enough, when justice was not being brought to bear, to tell the truth and bring about change.
