Publisher Comments:

Bestselling author Kathryn Lasky's Wolves of the Beyond, the stunning new spinoff from the legendary Guardians of Ga'hoole, is now in paperback!

A wolf mother has given birth, but the warm bundle snuffling next to her brings only anguish. The pup, otherwise healthy, has a twisted paw, and the mother knows what the harsh code of the pack demands. Her pup will be taken from her and abandoned on a desolate hill. The pack cannot have weakness - the wolf mother knows that her pup is condemned to die.

But alone in the wilderness, the pup, Faolan, does not perish. This his story - a story of survival, of courage, and of love triumphant. This is Faolan's story, the wolf pup who rose up to change forevever the Wolves of the Beyond.

Synopsis:

A middle-grade novel of high adventure set in Alaska about a girl with her own dog team who finds an injured sledder in the wilderness. How they survive for the next few days makes for gripping adventure reading.

Synopsis:

Victoria Secord, a fourteen-year-old Alaskan dogsled racer, loses her way on a routine outing with her dogs. With food gone and temperatures dropping, her survival and that of her dogs and the mysterious boy she meets in the woods is entirely up to her.

The author Terry Lynn Johnson is a musher herself, and her crackling writing puts readers at the reins as Victoria and Chris experience setbacks, mistakes, and small triumphs in their wilderness adventure.

I read this book because I read Lasky's Guardians of Ga'Hoole, and this series connects to it. I love wolves, and I love the main character of this book. We see Faolan as a young, abandoned pup, and we learn his story of how he survives in the cold wild on his own until he finds his own pack. This is book one of about six, I believe.
