I am a person who greatly appreciates the quiet and solitary moments in life, especially in this society of ever-increasing noise, so it was quite refreshing to find The Quiet Book by Deborah Underwood. This book is a lovely journey through many different flavors of quiet ('coloring in the lines' quiet, 'best friends don't need to talk' quiet, 'last one to get picked up from school' quiet) and a reminder for adults about how to appreciate and reflect on many of the simpler, less chaotic times in our lives.

Renata Liwska lives and works in Calgary, Canada, with her illustrator husband, Mike. Her childhood memories are of growing up in Warsaw, Poland. Drawing a picture book quiet is Renata Liwska's favorite kind of quiet. Renata's previous picture books includes Little Panda which she wrote and illustrated.

A wonderful bedtime story for children of all ages. The illustrations are glorious and the personalities of each creature shine through. Highly recommended.

Much lauded, Deborah Underwood's The Quiet Book is a lovely meditation on quiet, perfect for a reading snuggled with your child before bedtime. Renata Liwska's muted images of bears, porcupines, and even somehow soft-seeming fish provide often humorous context for the kinds of quiet described: "Trying not to hiccup quiet" depicts a rabbit with its paws over its mouth being held upside down in the background while a trio of birds plays an instrumental. All of the predominantly grey, brown & cream illustrations contain subtle surprises (look at that cactus shadow) for the child who wants to enjoy it again in "What flashlight?" quiet.

Have you had a rough day? are you tired and frazzled? This is the book for you. It will remind you of the perfect quiet place. It names all kinds of quiet and floats you there. Are your kids racing and running with that unquenchable energy and now it is bedtime? How do you get them to stop? Sit down with this book and remember all the wonderful kinds of quiet. Get them to help you remember more and they will settle and become quiet too. Beautiful illustrations. So relaxing. A true joy!
