Assassin's Apprentice is a great, enjoyable reads. Assassins, intrigue, magic, and an interesting world — what's not to love? Usually I don't like coming-of-age stories, but this one is very well done and steers clear of many of the traps that fantasy stories fall into. I would recommend it to any fantasy fan.

Publisher Comments:

Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal court by his father's gruff stableman. He is treated like an outcast by all the royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him sectetly tutored in the arts of the assassin. For in Fitz's blood runs the magic Skill--and the darker knowledge of a child raised with the stable hounds and rejected by his family. As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts, Fitz is growing to manhood. Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission. And though some regard him as a threat to the throne, he may just be the key to the survival of the kingdom.

This was a good straight-up fantasy novel. The characters were fascinating and it kept me turning the pages. There is nothing particularly special about it, except the fact that it's consistently engrossing and a lot of fun, which is pretty special already. In addition to being a good read for adults, this would also be great for teens who are fans of Tamora Pierce -- there's a lot of her easy worldbuilding sensibility here. The characters are in a lot of ways darker and more complex, but I think Pierce's fans would find a lot here to like.

Well thought out and unique plot. The characters are real and the plots of intrigue make it a good read regardless of whether you like fantasy.
