Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Peter Carey's astonishing novel is a fast-moving extravaganza, both funny and gripping, about a man who, recovering from death, is convinced that he is in hell.

Review:

"Matalon's writing, often exquisite in Jessica Cohen's translation from the Hebrew, shifts down from warfare to bereavement, from the tragedy of the extremes to the sorrowfulness of the mean....If the author wields thunderous themes in the Tel Aviv sections, she masters small, life-giving details in the French ones." New York Times

Review:

"Poses the biggest questions about life, death and the twilight state of existence in the weirdest way. Bliss fulminates on the toxic dangers of technology and moral compromise [and] has big, randy dreams about its hero's search for a bucolic heaven on earth." Time

Avital Gad Cykman, September 19, 2007 (view all comments by Avital Gad Cykman)
Peter Carey tells you how people look, think and feel-all in total disharmony with themselves and with other people, how each trait and person keeps changing and is completely unreliable, except marginals. Some descriptions of the mind work take my breath away with their accuracy.
Finished it, and now I want more peter Carey!
