Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Return of the King is the third part of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings.

The Companions of the Ring have become involved in separate adventures as the quest continues. Aragorn, revealed as the hidden heir of the ancient Kings of the West, joined with the Riders of Rohan against the forces of Isengard and took part in the desperate victory of the Hornburg. Merry and Pippin, captured by the Orcs, escaped into Fangorn Forest and there encountered the Ents. Gandalf returned, miraculously, and defeated the evil wizard, Saruman.

Meanwhile, Sam and Frodo progressed toward Mordor to destroy the Ring, accompanied by Smeagol — Gollum, still obsessed by his "preciouss." After a battle with the giant spider, Shelob, Sam left his master for dead; but Frodo is still alive — in the hands of the Orcs. And all the time the armies of the Dark Lord are massing.

Review:

"There are very few works of genius in recent literature. This is one." Michael Straight, The Nation

Review:

"A triumphant close...a grand piece of work, grand in both conception and execution. An astonishing imaginative tour de force." Daily Telegraph

Review:

"One of the great fairy-tale quests in modern literature." Time

Review:

"A remarkable book." Newsweek

Review:

"Tolkien?s stories take place against a background of measureless depth....That background is ever-present in the creator?s mind and it gives Frodo and company a three-dimensional reality that is seldom found in this kind of writing." The Washington Post

Review:

"An extraordinary work — pure excitement." The New York Times

Review:

"The great tale of wonder, like the great novel, is not a preoccupation of children....[T]he adult mind has, if anything, greater need of fantasy than that of a child....In The Lord of the Rings, a whole Secondary World is created and successfully sustained through three large volumes. These are sure to remain Tolkien's life work, and are certainly destined to outlast our time." Loren Eisley, New York Herald Tribune Book Week

Synopsis:

The classic edition illustrated by Alan Lee is now updated with beautiful, full-color paintings.

A magnificent ending to a fantastic trilogy. This particular edition has gorgeous paintings by Alan Lee, many of which served as inspiration for the sets and artwork in the films. It's really worthwhile to invest in the expensive edition, I think, if you're like me and plan on re-reading and keeping this book forever.
