Synopses & Reviews

From Powells.com:

"In On Writing, Stephen King celebrates his influences, shares his first attempts at writing, sheds new light on some of his own books, reveals his process, offers his advice, and relates in vivid detail the story of the 1999 roadside accident that nearly cost him his life. It's a first-hand guide to the writer — and to writing, itself. Clear-headed, honest, and opinionated, On Writing offers a wealth of technical advice with a refreshing lack of the academic snobbery so common in writing guides, paying due respect instead to the ultimate goal of any aspiring writer, gaining a readership." Dave Weich, Powells.com

Publisher Comments:

"Long live the King," hailed Entertainment Weekly upon the publication of Stephen King's On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer's craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King's advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999 — and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery. Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, On Writing will empower and entertain everyone who reads it — fans, writers, and anyone who loves a great story well told.

'On Writing' is a great read whether you want to be a writer or not. Great stories from glimpses of his life and journey to becoming the successful person he is today. It's a very inspiring and humbling book.

Unlike other books on writing that seem to off up a prescription for writing, King's book acts as more of an inspiration or at least as the kick I needed to start taking myself more seriously as a writer.

If you are a Stephen King fan and want to know more about how he writes, you should read this book.
If you're a Stephen King fan and you're interested in reading about his life (and about the accident that almost took his life), you should read this book.
Even if you don't necessarily care about Stephen King, but you're interested in writing, you should read this book.
I'm all of the above, and love this book, but I think you can still be NONE of the above and enjoy it -- give it a try!
