Tracing the roots of political Zionism back to the pogroms of Russia and the Dreyfus Affair, Morris describes the gradual influx of Jewish settlers into Palestine and the impact they had on the Arab population. Following the Holocaust, the first Arab-Israeli war of 1948 resulted in the establishment of the State of Israel, but it also shattered Palestinian Arab society and gave rise to a massive refugee problem. Benny Morris is a Professor of History at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheeba, Israel.

I've been desperately looking for a book that gives an objective overview of the Zionist-Arab conflict. Seems like it would be easy, but given the intensity of the issue on either side (understandably so), even those touting to be a completely objective history tend to skew one way or the other. This book is DRY. However, it's exactly what is needed, an absolutely dry statement of historical fact, doing its best to present the points on both sides of the divide. It's worth trudging through the dusty history textbook quality of the writing to get a basis for understanding the conflict and how it affects politics today. If you have any interest in viewing media portrayal of the middle east with your critical thinking cap on, I would suggest this book.
