About the Author

Andrew Solomon studied at Yale University and Jesus College Cambridge. He is a regular contributor to The New Yorker, ArtForum, and The New York Times Magazine. He is the author of The Irony Tower: Soviet Artists in a Time of Glasnost and a novel, A Stone Boat, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times First Fiction Award. He is the winner of the 2001 National Book Award.

Andrew Solomon writes honestly about his own debilitating depression. He has also provided the reader with the most comprehensive "Atlas of Depression" known today. His research on this horrible illness is extensive. Evey human should read Noonday Demon to gain a correct understanding of depressive illness. The stigma of mental illness is alive and well in our society. Understanding mental illness will help to break that stigma. Thank you, Andrew Solomon, for your noble work. Many sufferers will be guided to the correct treatment which will alleviate suffering and save lives.

An atlas indeed! Any depressive will find themselves in the pages of this book. Particularly relevant for depressives who have tried to self-medicate with illicit drugs. Solomon’s memoir is honest and sensitive and shows how depression is an ongoing battle throughout one’s life.

This is one of the most comprehensive, sensitive, and well-written books about depression I've had the pleasure to read. It's very long, and it can be rather heavy-going, but even when Solomon is describing his own bouts with the illness, I never found it depressing to read.
