Finally back in print! Ben is a very smart sixth grader. George is the "funny little man who lives inside Ben" (get the parentheses now?). Ben's always been content enough with his unique situation, and smart enough to keep George a secret, but then Ben's quest to have friends other than George causes things to go awry. Factors leading to the mayhem include a meddling stepmother, a cool senior lab partner, and a stolen car. One of the best things about this book is that Konigsburg doesn't back down on the very weird premise that there is a man living inside Ben. This book is unusual in the best possible sense — and is one of many gems by Konigsburg. Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Sophie's no ordinary house spider. She's an artist; and every web she spins is more wondrous than the one before. But don't mention that to the guests at Beekman's Boardinghouse, because they don't like spiders. No one there wants anything to do with Sophie or her magnificent creations — no one except the woman on the third floor. She's a new mother "weaving" something herself; and when she runs out of yarn, Sophie knows the time has finally come to create the masterpiece of a lifetime. Eileen Spinelli and Jane Dyer, the award-winning duo who created the best-selling When Mama Comes Home Tonight, team up once again to tell the charming and bittersweet tale of an exceptionally gifted spider and the lengths she's willing to go to share her gifts with those around her. From Our Staff:Ew! Yuck! A spider! Well, that may be what some people think when they see a spider; it may even be what you think, but you won't react that way when you meet Sophie. Sophie is an artist, weaving beautiful, functional webs. However, like so many great artists, she is misunderstood wherever she goes in her short spider life — until finally, she scrambles into the apartment of a woman who smiles at Sophie rather than shooing her away, and for whom Sophie finally creates her masterpiece. (P.S. Read the author and illustrator bios: the inspiration for this story is as captivating as the story and illustrations themselves!) Synopsis:Sophie is not an average spider--she's an artist! Every web she spins is more wondrous than the one before, especially when she spins up something special for the new baby. Full-color illustrations. About the AuthorWhen she was a young woman, celebrated author Eileen Spinelli lived in a boardinghouse. There, she met a young mother who couldn't afford to buy her new baby a blanket and had to use an old, brown, scratchy one provided by the landlady. Many years have passed, but Eileen never forgot that experience. She wrote Sophie's Masterpiece as a way of finally giving that baby the blanket she always wanted him to have. Eileen's other picture books include When Mama Comes Home Tonight and Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch. She lives in West Chester, Pennsylvania with her husband, author Jerry Spinelli.
