Nina's dilemma: Betray others or be killed. Nina Idi has been arrested for treason for falsely accusing some classmates of being illegal children — a capital crime in their society, which allows each family only two children. Now, in danger of being executed herself, she is asked by the government to get three young children to trust her enough to confide in her, and then betray them. The children will die; Nina will live. Nina has a better idea, a plan to save the children and herself. But how can she accomplish it when things are never what they seem, and when she isn't sure she can trust anyone at all?

Synopsis:

Nina Idi has been arrested for falsely accusing some classmates of being illegal third children--a capital crime in their society. Now she is being asked to betray others--or risk being executed.

Nina Idi — a third child in a society where families are allowed only two children — has been betrayed by the boy she loved, and arrested by the Population Police for exposing other alleged third children. Angry and confused, Nina knows only one thing for sure: She is innocent of the charges. But now she is faced with the most difficult choice of her life: Get three other prisoners to admit they are shadow children and be spared herself, or refuse to cooperate and be killed.

The options are clear. The choice, Nina discovers, is not....
