Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Featuring full-color illustrations by acclaimed comic book artist Bernie Wrightson, The Dark V: Wolves of the Calla finds the world's bestselling author Stephen King continuing the adventures of Roland, the last gunslinger and survivor of a civilized world that has "moved on."

Roland's quest is ka, an inevitable destiny — to reach and perhaps save the Dark Tower, which stands at the center of everywhere and everywhen, the nexus of all space and time. This pursuit brings Roland and his three fellow questions to Calla Bryn Sturgis, a community lying along the Path of the Beam, which is the way to the Tower. Before advancing, however, they must face the evil wolves of Thunderclap, predators who threaten to destroy the Calla by abducting its young.

Wolves of the Calla is among Stephen King's most visionary works of fiction — a dazzling continuation of what may well be his signature achievement.

Review:

"[A] hypnotic blend of suspense and sentimentality...sprawling, eventful tale of demons, monsters, narrow escapes and magic portals." The New York Times Book Review

Review:

"The high suspense and extensive character development here...plus the enormity of King's ever-expanding universe, will surely keep his 'Constant Readers' in awe." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"King stuffs the book with juice, like the big flashback, in which Pere Callahan reveals his past in...Salem's Lot. One of the greatest cavalcades in popular fiction is back on track." Ray Olson, Booklist

Review:

"Ably illustrating the reasons for his immense popularity, King not only tells a great story, he gives his characters wonderful stories to tell, too....King exudes such craft, control and playfulness." BookPage

Review:

"With every chapter, one gets the feeling that this colossal story means a lot to King, that he's telling it because he has to....If you've been hanging on since the very beginning, you won't be disappointed by this chapter, and you'll only be left eager for more." San Francisco Chronicle

Review:

"Loyalty, friendship and the ability to choose are the ultimate themes of the series, and this book furthers those themes admirably..." Rocky Mountain News

Review:

"Brilliant in technique and ability...Feed your head! Now dig in, 'cause King's latest in this seven-course banquet...is a lip-smacking, brain-filling repast." The Denver Post

Review:

"Like many of King's other books, this is a long one. A hefty 714 pages, it's an investment....Still, it's worth it. Say what you will about Stephen King, the man can spin a yarn, and a great one at that." Philadelphia Inquirer

Review:

"The master of the macabre....[King] is still quite the entertainer." People

Review:

"Wolves of the Calla is one of the strongest entries yet in what will surely be a master storyteller's magnum opus." Locus

Review:

"A solid addition to the fantasy series....Though King does an admirable job of recounting earlier adventures, newcomers to Roland's journey would be better off starting at the beginning." Dallas-Ft. Worth Star Telegram

Review:

"Wolves of the Calla is a better book than its predecessor...but it has some of the same drawbacks, though King does manage to lasso them a bit better....[It] gets us down the 'Path of the Beam' toward that final Tower in pleasurable fashion." Kansas City Star

Review:

"Wolves of the Calla has no propulsion. It's a maddening exercise in interminable dawdling....[A] fairy-tale land of towers, wastelands, neglected characterization and a sprawling plot that works against King's usual narrative strengths." Houston Chronicle

Review:

"Once the bullets start flying and the blood begins to flow, you realize that the slow buildup was worth it. As in the previous books, King puts you into the thick of the action and delivers the payoff in heart-racing, cinematic fashion." The Oregonian (Portland, OR)

Review:

"An impressive work of mythic magnitude. May turn out to be Stephen King's greatest literary achievement." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Review:

"'The Dark Tower' is King's masterpiece....Wolves of the Calla succeeds as a standalone work." Bangor Daily News

Review:

"King does not fail us....Fans will delight not only in King's continued gleeful intertwining of multiple genres but perhaps most of all in the return of 'Salem's Lot's Father Callahan." Library Journal
