Publisher Comments:

When John met Savannah, he knew he was ready to turn over a new leaf. Always the angry rebel, he had dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life. Then he meets Savannah. The attraction is mutual and quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah vowing to wait for John while he finishes his tour of duty.

What neither realises is that 9/11 will change everything, prompting John to re-enlist and fulfil what he feels is his duty to his country and fellow soldiers. And, sadly, as so often happens when lovers are young and separations are long, Savannah falls in love with someone else. 'Dear John . . . ' the letter reads, and both their lives are changed for ever.

Years later, when John returns to North Carolina, he must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still the only one for him. Now John must make the hardest decision of his life . . .

Forgettable -- I had heard of a couple of Nicholas Sparks's book titles as movies before I realized they were books first. I haven't seen the movies, but I was interested in the books since they were popular enough to be made into films. Sorry to say, when I saw "Dear John" at a used book sale, I didn't even remember that I had read it until I started reading it again.

To me, the writing was not very good or engrossing;
I just read it because it was something to do. The story contained a kind of unnecessary secrecy that perhaps is supposed to seem noble, but I didn't like or admire it.

Maybe part of the strain I felt in this story and in the writing could be related to the fact that one of Sparks's children has the same name, Savannah, as his main female character.

This book was better than a typical phony-sounding romance novel, but didn't do much for me.

I loved the book. Not only did it fill your heat with hope for Savannah and John, it renewed an empty part of their livs. Until fate intervened resulting in 'Dear John....' at a time when John desperately needed Savannah to understand and love him.
I feel that Savannah was someone that turned to be self-centered and only thought of herself.

I thought this book was very good and, maybe the best book I have ever read. It was a great and just really touching. In general I think it is a amazing book.
