She received her B.A. from Spelman College (where, in addition to psychology, she studied Kiswahili) and her doctorate from Howard University. She holds memberships in the National Council of Black Studies, the Association of Black Psychologists, the American Psychological Association; and the Society for the Study of Social Issues. She has written and reported for the Afro-Americannewspapers in Washington, D.C., and in Baltimore, MD.
