John Deere Tractor Legacy

John Deere Tractor Legacy Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Although he began his career as a blacksmith, John Deere had a profound influence on the farming world. And his legacy has remained strong through generations.

From the steel plow in 1837 and the gasoline-powered farm tractor in 1892 to today’s advanced models, Deere & Company has produced an incredible array of agricultural products. Now doing business in more than 160 countries around the globe and employing more than 40,000 people, the corporation is the world’s most famous and successful tractor manufacturer.

But through the decades, Deere has also been involved in many other aspects of farm life, covered here for the first time in book form: from listers and hay-balers to others implements and threshing machines—even bicycles, automobiles, lawn and garden tractors, and snowmobiles.

John Deere Tractor Legacy is edited by the world’s most respected and best known Deere historian and expert, Don Macmillan—so you know you can rely on its information. This comprehensive history of the company and its legacy includes a biography of John Deere himself, plus articles by Deere engineers and historians such as Wayne Broehl, Harold Brock, Orrin Miller, and others.

You’ll find never-before-published photos and other material in John Deere Tractor Legacy, including compelling accounts of the development of the Waterloo Boy and the Johnny Popper two-cylinder tractors. You’ll also discover how Deere’s work for the U.S. Army during World War II helped the company become the number one tractor manufacturer in the world.

The text is complemented by a timeline that puts the history of the company and its machinery into a larger historical context, plus a wide array of images from the Deere archives and noted tractor photographer Ralph W. Sanders.
