Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This stunning debut combines reading with the world of internet gaming to create a masterful new genre that will allow teens to take the story from the page into the world of cyberspace and beyond.

Things weren't so peachy in Cathy's life before Victor broke up with her. Her father died unexpectedly, she’s failing school, and her best friend is mad at her. But when Cathy decides to investigate Victor's reasons for ending their relationship, things suddenly go from bad to very, very, very bad as her findings produce more questions than answers. For instance, what does the death of Victor's co-worker, the strange mark that appeared on Cathy's arm, and the surreal behavior of several Chinese elders have to do with it?

Through Cathy's unique and irresistible voice — and lots of proof in the form of letters, photographs, date book entries, telephone numbers readers can call, websites they can access, as well as secrets only a careful reader will be able to decipher — readers will enter a strange and fascinating world where things often aren't how they appear.

Review:

"A surprisingly lyrical addition to the teen-lit genre." The New York Times

Review:

"The final resolution of the mystery deftly explains all the clues without doing all the work for the reader, and is a beautiful meditation on life and death (that doesn't take itself too seriously)." KLIATT

Review:

"The book seems intended to draw in gamers or fans of shows like Lost or the film Donnie Darko." School Library Journal

Synopsis:

The publishing phenomenon Cathys Book redefined the way teens approach novels and set a new standard for interactivity, using the most popular kids technology to enhance the experience of reading a really good story. As a new chapter is about to unfold with the publication of the sequel, Cathys Key later this spring, the original novel is available in trade paperback. All of the supplementary items from the “evidence pack” are reproduced on pages in the back of the book, making this edition more accessible and portable. All of the original websites, phone numbers, and secret codes are still operational. Part romance, part thriller, part mystery, Cathys Book stands on its own beyond the interactive angle and the intense marketing campaign that made it a bestseller. Readers identify with Cathy, they read her story, listen to her phone messages, check out the websites she mentions, and they leave her messages on her MySpace.com page and on a special voicemail. Fans have even created their own videos on YouTube, demonstrating their comfort and familiarity with this level of interactivity and technology. Reviewers and awards committees have also recognized the unique phenomenon that reset the bar for engaging teen novels. Dont miss this opportunity to get caught up in Cathys world all over again! Included in the paperback edition only is a special, teaser chapter from the sequel (which pubs two months later), to whet the appetite of the thousands of readers who have gotten caught up in the web of Cathys story! A YALSA Quick Pick

This book was off to a slow start. I enjoyed the book, but not as much as I had anticipated. Visiting the web links took a lot of time, and I did not learn anything new, aside from a few interesting tidbits about culture and stuff. But I have found and heard from many other readers that aside from the interaction factor, calling long-distance doesn't really add much. Life goes on.

Cathy is an older teenager, who is highly unrelatable. She stalks her boyfriend, and she sneaks into his workplace. She never really gets caught, and the belivability factor just wasnt there.

There was a big problem with motivating myself to continue on. Sometimes I just wanted to try something else, because I wasn't getting much substance.

But then I arrvied at the end. The twist was the only thing that made the book worthwhile, even though it was a bit Twilight-esque.

In this book, everyone gets their happy ending, which leaves you feeling full and refreshed.

Despite all of this, I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

SUMMARY

Cathy is not just your normal run of the mill teenage girl. She works with conviction, and she has goals that simply must be attained. Cathy is acompained through all of this by her best friend, Emma. Emma is the brains. She tries to keep Cathy rational, but realizes that she simply can not be reined in.

Victor and Cathy meet and begin dating. There is never a faithful kiss, but Cathy will continue to hope for one eventually. When Victor suddenly breaks up with Cathy without reason, she becomes determined to get back into his life.

A series of mysterious clues lead Cathy to believe that there is something more to Victor than meets the eye. Needle marks on her arm, and a gap in her memory lead to conclusions that he is testing something on her, as he works in bio-medics.

As not to give away the shocking ending, heres a little clue... the couple gets together, and may stay that way... forever.
