Book News Annotation:
Based in Bend, Oregon, Watts has been climbing at Smith Rock since 1975 and spearheaded its rise to prominence as an international sport-climbing destination. He presents a long-awaited revised edition of his 1992 climbing guide to Smith Rock State Park and the surrounding area. Offering 1,800 routes--hundreds new to this edition--the guide assumes readers have a solid understanding of climbing techniques and vocabulary. Following an introductory description of the area--including a detailed account of its emergence as a sport-climbing mecca--the text contains 15 sections covering specific areas of the Park. Each section contains an overview of the area, the type of climbing, seasons and climate information, precautions and regulations, gear, camping and accommodations, and directions to the area, followed by written descriptions of the routes. The material is illustrated with linear diagrams, color photographs--all new to the second edition--and topographical maps. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
