Publisher Comments:

Designed for both classroom use and as a text for self-teaching language learners, this book consists of 30 work units, an extensive Italian-English and English-Italian vocabulary list, idioms, and dialogues, all focused to build proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and understanding Italian. Word-completion and multiple-choice exercises, word games, and entertaining stories in dialogue form are supplemented with photos of Italian landmarks, cartoon-style illustrations, and reproductions of Italian classical art that give students something of the flavor of contemporary Italian culture. Italian Now! emphasizes practical, functional use of conversational and informal written Italian but also offers solid foundation in Italian grammar, verb forms, and correct sentence structure.

I am a high school junior who loves foreign languages. I completed this book last year.
Trying to find good quality Italian resources that teach more than tourist phrases, or are hardly more than vague, overly grammar/rule-oriented instruction manuals was difficult for me. My goal was to learn Italian and be able to listen and speak the language with ease...all by self-study.

Enter "Italian Now!". I was amazed at how well this book taught me Italian. It is extremely thorough and in-depth, but never dry or boring. It?s well-paced, and teaches many verb tenses, forms of verb conjugations, grammar, as well as idioms and how the language is ACTUALLY used. The exercises are well-written because while offering practice with certain verbs or grammar rules, the sentences you have to write are varied and bring a lot of vocabulary you?ve amassed (so you?re reviewing other concepts and words while practicing new material). All-in-all, the Italian I learned through this book was useful and practical, and after completing it, I felt I had a firm grip on the language where I could base further study.

I was able to go to Italy last summer, and because I have a friend there, I spoke a lot of Italian. I?m really happy to say that thanks to some good quality resources in Italian resources I?ve found (Italian Now! being one of the best), I was able to converse and understand Italian very well, especially for only having instruction in written Italian!

So?I?ll finish with some parting advice: use this book with Italian tapes?even tapes only listing off tourist phrases will do fine, so you can pick up how the language actually sounds while you?re working on the nitty-gritty of how Italian works. Also, after completing this book, I highly recommend the ?Italian Verb Workbook,? also by Marcel Danesi. It?s a great review of the Italian you just learned, but it also expands on grammar rules, vocabulary, and definitely gives more verbs to learn (Italian Now! doesn?t teach as many verbs, but sets the rules down so you know how to conjugate just about every verb.).

I can?t wait for level two to come out!!! : )
Ciao!
