Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

“A contemporary fantasy classic.”—Publishers Weekly

“Emma Bull is really good.”—Neil Gaiman

Acclaimed by critics and readers on its first publication in 1987, winner of the Locus Award for Best First Novel, Emma Bull’s War for the Oaks is one of the novels that has defined modern urban fantasy.

Eddi McCandry sings rock and roll. But her boyfriend just dumped her, her band just broke up, and life could hardly be worse. Then, walking home through downtown Minneapolis on a dark night, she finds herself drafted into an invisible war between the faerie folk. Now, more than her own survival is at risk—and her own preferences, musical and personal, are very much beside the point.

By turns tough and lyrical, fabulous and down-to-earth, War for the Oaks is a fantasy novel that’s as much about this world as about the other one. It’s about real love and loyalty, about real music and musicians, about false glamour and true art. It will change the way you hear and see your own daily life.

“One of the most engaging fantasies I’ve read in a long time.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“Knifes through the fantasy genre like a sharp blade of wind.” —Charles de Lint

Review:

"One of the most engaging fantasies I've read in a long time." Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Review:

"Originally published by Ace in 1987, this reprint of a minor fantasy cult classic should attract new readers with its appealing and unusual blend of the world of rock and roll performers with the coexistent world of Faerie....For many readers, the fey qualities of the wispy fantasy may be enough; Eddi even labels her new band Eddi and the Feys. The strength of the novel, however, is in the nonfantasy scenes. These demonstrate a sure knowledge of rock music and the field, and contribute to the climax, a struggle between Eddi and the dark queen at a concert. In an appendix of special interest to fans, Bull includes excerpts of a screenplay version of the book she and her husband, Will Shetterly, wrote. A film appears an unlikely bet, but the author's prose portrayal of Faerie infringing on the real world remains an imaginative triumph." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Knifes through the fantasy genre like a sharp blade of wind." Charles de Lint, author of Onion Girl

Synopsis:

An aspiring young rock-and-roll singer's life is astonishingly changed when she is drafted into the war of the faeries, where she is instructed to use her musical talents to defeat an evil enemy.

emma bull delivers a fast paced story that makes it hard to remember there is an outside world. Her characters are likable, believable, and unforgettable that I keep hoping to see more work by her so that I can see them again.

This is a delightful book. It's fantasy for people who aren't necessarily fantasy fans. That is, the characters are fairies and the like, but she doesn't take pages and pages just to describe in great detail which wings the left phalanx of fairies sports, and which ancient celtic battle gave them their name and their broad, blue swords, and on and on. It's just a good story with a modern-day protagonist entering a world she didn't know existed. I really liked it a lot.
