Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Here is the extraordinary story of the last and greatest native civilization of North America, at the height of its magnificence. It is a story told in the words of one of the most robust and memorable characters in modern fiction. His name is Mixtli-Dark Cloud. Rising above his lowly station, Mixtli distinguishes himself as a scribe and later a warrior. He earns a fortune as a traveling merchant, exploring every part of what the Aztecs called The One World-the far lands of mountains, jungles, deserts, seacoasts.

This is an absolutely perfect book. I'm not a big reader and I was threatened by the number of pages in the book, but that didn't do anything to stop me from finishing this book. It is filled with great history about an interesting, but for the most part, unknown culture. Mixtli-Dark Cloud is a great character, which Jennings portrays with great detail in varying situations. When I first started reading it, I felt as if Mixtli was just a person who was misunderstood by the Spaniards, but as the story went along my feelings turned to pity and anger and ultimately a realness that grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

This book is good for everyone!

This is one of the most intriging books I have ever read. I first read this book approx. 26 years ago and still one of my most favorite fiction novel. Now my granddaughter, who is 14 years old, is an avid reader and this a must for her. It teaches history with a story line that will keep you hooked on it till it's finish. As my granddaughter stated, "It's one of those books you wish would never end" - SO TRUE!
