Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The masterpiece that started the New York Times bestselling epic The Sword of Truth.

In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help...and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence. In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims.

Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them — for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say. In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword — to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed...or that their time has run out.

This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

Review:

"Wonderfully creative, seamless, and stirring." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"[T]his first novel offers an intriguing variant on the standard fantasy quest. The richly detailed world and complex characters will appeal to mature fantasy aficionados." Library Journal

Review:

"Both the characters and their world come to life, and Goodkind's ambitious juxtaposition of modern ambiguities and the classical fantasy setting works more often than not." Booklist

Review:

"Goodkind's writing improves as the book winds on...but, for the most part, his prose is flat, his ideas hackneyed...his characters tediously moralistic and his plot without originality." Publishers Weekly

I thought this book would be just another failed attempt at fantasy. However, instead I found a brilliantly written book with with and developed characters. I found it amusing and one of those books you just can't put down.

I loved it and would recommend it to ANYONE. I hope you buy this book, read it, and enjoy it as much as I did!!!!

Excellent book, excellent series. This first book is one of the most engaging because it is filled with action. Even if you do not generally read Sci Fi, if you like history, rebellions, patriotism, or politics, there are elements to this book that will appeal to you.

This is an amazing epic fantasy tale. In book one, Mr. Goodkind introduces the reader to his world. For some readers it may start out slow as he was setting everything up in order for the reader to understand what was going on in the world at the time.
Book one throws the reader into a whirlwind tale of good and evil. Love, loss, sacrifice, lies and truths. This is a must read for anyone who loves fantasy novels. Mr. Goodkind is on the same level as the greats Jordan and Martin.
A great great read.
