I read this book several months after my mom committed suicide, mostly while flying from Alaska for a conference in New York. I found myself tearing up more often than not as I followed Deo's journey from Burundi and Rwanda to America, where he worked for small tips and was taken in by some very generous people. This is a miraculous story about someone who, with his own perseverance and the will to find his family again, and the help of several generous people who saw the potential for greatness that was within him, surmounted so many obstacles with grace. Mr. Kidder does not gloss over the trauma that Deo has to go through as he deals with his memories of the genocide he witnessed in Burundi, and that makes the story even more heartbreaking and inspiring.
I cried when I finished this book, but I did not cry from hopelessness. I cried because this is a beautiful testament to the goodness that resides within each human being, and the darkness that comes from genocide and abandonment. I cried because I was truly inspired by the story of Deo and his quest to go back to his country and help to improve conditions when he had the choice to forget it and focus more on himself. I would hand this book to anyone and tell them to read it, but I would give it most to people who are going through their own dark times and say, "here is some hope."

Wow! Tracy Kidder does it again! In the eloquent telling of one remarkable man's story, Kidder gives us insight into war trauma, ethnic violence, a country and region, the violence of poverty. And he gives us hope!

I first read Mountains Beyond Mountains. When I saw Kidder had a new book out, I picked it up, not even knowing what it was about. This is another must-read for all time.
