Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Opening with the exotic Lady Death entering the gumshoe-writer's seedy office in pursuit of a writer named Celine, this novel demonstrates Bukowski's own brand of humour and realism, opening up a landscape of seamy Los Angeles.

Book News Annotation:

The late poet, novelist, and (spare the expression) man of letters, Charles Bukowski, is said to have left many books-worth of material in the can (so to speak), but this characteristically gritty piece of Bukowskiana is no patchwork, and was complete and in production at the time of his death. All of Bukowski will one day be essential to every collection--and never cheaper than now.

About the Author

Charles Bukowsk is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of three. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944 when he was twenty-four and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

I'm slightly ambivalent towards this book. I have read a bit of Bukowski's poetry and loved it, but this is the first novel of his that I've read (and it's the last novel he wrote). It's dedicated to 'bad writing', and at a reading you would be want to see why, as the writing is fairly atrocious at times, but the plot twists, including Lady Death, seemingly immortal authors, the unfaithful wife, invasion of space aliens, loan sharks, phone sex, and more are at times hilarious, and poignant, as is the dialog. That's what sucked me in to this fast-paced farce of a detective novel and why I'd recommend it to almost anyone (who doesn't have tender sensibilities).
