Staff Pick

This is one of my favorites books by an Oregon author. It's an amazing story of the friendship between two natural enemies: a cattle rancher and a coyote. Dayton O. Hyde is lyrical (not what you'd expect from a cattle rancher) in his caring descriptions of the land and the wildlife. He argues that one should work with nature, not against it. This is a surprising story, not by a man from a new generation of progressive ranchers, but a man of middle years, raising a family amid the harsh climatic and economic conditions of eastern Oregon — and, yet, here he is embracing the thoughts and practices of a young, liberal idealist!

I've since found out that the Hyde family still live and work on the ranch (his daughter runs the place now). They consider themselves stewards of the land and they now raise organic beef. Very cool!
