Publisher Comments:

Discover firsthand in this book/cd set the powerful effects sound has on you and learn to customize your own soundscape for a better quality of life. x Sound pioneer Joshua Leeds shows how to use music to reduce stress, enhance learning, improve performance, and address conditions as diverse as dyslexia and depression. x Includes accompanying cd featuring musical examples designed to induce specific mental states such as relaxation, receptivity, concentration, and creativity. Sound plays a more vital role in human health and learning than we ever imagined. Beginning with fetal development, sound waves "charge" the brain, stimulating neurodevelopment. Throughout life, sound continues to fuel the nervous system. The Power of Sound explains why we need certain "nutrient" sounds for optimum health and describes how auditory dysfunction occurs when we are overexposed to noise pollution, trauma, or stress. In addition to preserving good health, sound can also heal. The ability to process, understand, and communicate with our world is largely dependent upon a delicate combination of auditory functions. New music and sound techniques--including filtered Mozart, entrained rhythms, and resonant frequencies--can retrain the auditory system to take in a full spectrum of sound. Improved hearing can impact speech and language skills, short-term memory, stress-related conditions, and low immune function. An accompanying CD of music designed to produce specific brain-wave patterns brings an exciting extra dimension to the text. Readers will feel the effects of a variety of sounds as they learn to design their own beneficial soundscapes.

What we hear--and how we process it--has a far greater impact on our daily living than we realize. From the womb to the moment we die we are inescapably surrounded by sound, and what we hear can either energize or deplete our nervous systems. It is no exaggeration to say that what goes into our ears can harm us or heal us.
