Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

An approachable cookbook intended for home cooks making dinner for their families, gluten-free.

Shauna Ahern, the author of Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef — named by the New York Times as one of the best cookbooks of 2010 — returns with a new cookbook for busy people who still love to cook. Gluten-Free Girl Every Day features food you want to cook every day: fresh, satisfying, and filled with great flavors. The inspired ingredient pairings of these recipes come from the collaboration of Ahern and her husband Danny, a professional chef.

Vegetables in season are the key to these healthy, relatively simple recipes, along with whole grains, beans, and a few key spices and homemade sauces. Gluten-Free Girl Every Day also includes practical tips on how to stock a gluten-free pantry, as well as helpful insights into how to bake gluten-free.

  • Features 120 gluten-free recipes for weeknight dinners and desserts
  • Includes suggestions for foods that can be made ahead or frozen to make dinnertime easier
  • Organized around different types of dinners: Breakfast for Dinner, One-Pot Wonders, Stir Fries, and Breaking Down a Chicken, for example

All the recipes in Gluten-Free Girl Every Day are gluten-free, and many are dairy-free or vegetarian as well. However, the only thing that truly matters is that these dishes are delicious.

Review:

"This item, just published in April, includes tasty combos such as zucchini noodles with spinach pesto and feta and sunflower seeds. (Surprise: the "noodles" are thin raw zucchini strips, creating a base for a cool summer salad.)" Library Journal

Review:

"[Ahern] gives suggestions for not just simple substitutions, but also different cooking methods or strategies for making the recipe fit into your own schedule or pantry set-up. This style of recipe-writing allows for real-life flexibility, making Ahern's book a real boon to the everyday home cook." Serious Eats.com

Review:

"These are recipes for people who love food, period. Who needs gluten when you can eat this well?" Down with Gluten.com

Synopsis:

Though Gluten-Free Girl's blog (www.glutenfreegirl.com) receives nearly a million hits per month, the statistics aren't the full story. The blog is beloved by fans because Shauna Ahern's writing and recipes are so inspiring. The days are gone when a diagnosis of celiac disease or gluten-intolerance was a culinary death sentence, and Gluten-Free Girl has long been leading the movement for change.

Forget about dwelling on depriving yourself of wheat-based foods like bread and cookies — in this new collection, there are recipes for those and so much more. All of the dishes were created with every-day cooking in mind, with more accessible techniques and ingredients than the author's last book which, though acclaimed, was a little intimidating for beginner cooks.

As fans will expect and love, the stories throughout the book are plentiful and heart-warming, along with photos of Shauna and her family together, and of course gorgeous photography of the food by acclaimed photographer Penny De Los Santos.

I THINK THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. I HAVE NOT READ THE HOLD BOOK AS YET BUT KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT GLUTEN, A PROTEIN FOUND IN RYE OR BREADS AND GRAINS. THIS PROTEIN CAN EITHER BE HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY FOR A PERSON. A PERSON WHO HAS CELIAC DISEASE SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT GLUTEN. THEREFORE, THIS GLUTEN-FREE GIRL EVERY DAY BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT FOR HE OR SHE. HOWEVER, THE PERSON WHO DO NOT HAVE THE DISEASE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WORRY MUCH ABOUT GLUTEN AND TO ADD PROTEIN IS GOOD FOR A PERSON. THERE ARE ALSO THE GLUTEN'S DIET FOOD SUCH AS MEDIFAST'S CHEWY BARS FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES. I GIVE THIS BOOK 5-STARS.

This is a great book to make gluten-free cooking less intimidating. It often looks expensive and time-consuming, but it doesn't have to be! These are great recipes for venturing out beyond packaged mixes (although we all love Bob's Red Mill!) I don't care less about food because I don't eat wheat; I care more about it. And it's obvious from a book like this, that the author and her family do as well.
