Fueled by liquor, sex, and violence, this is the real wild west, unlike anything portrayed in the dime novels that first told its story.

About the Author

Pete Dexter is the author of the National Book Award winner Paris Trout and of God's Pocket, Deadwood, Brotherly Love, The Paperboy and Train. He was born in Michigan and raised in Georgia, Illinois, and eastern South Dakota. He lives on Puget Sound, Washington.

Occasionally brutal, callous, entertaining and inspiring, this tale of the “real” Wild West toes the line between reality and fiction. Some characters are little more than cameos, serving a peripheral, but pivotal, purpose (Agnes Lake comes to mind), while others are the catalyst for nearly all the drama (Charley Utter, for instance). All the while, these are stories upon stories, about how the unrepentant territories ate up people’s dreams and ambitions, leaving them with little morals and even less guidance.
