DMZ #01: On the Groundby Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli
What can I say about DMZ? It is one of my favorite graphic-novel series ever. The art is unique and high quality, and the plot doesn't have any parallel in the realm of graphic novels. The story is pertinent and well written, and simultaneously reflects city life as well as what it would be like to live in a war-torn America. The characters are as unique as flesh-and-blood people, and the choices they face are as real as can be. Wood and Burchielli don't shy away from anything; gritty would be an understatement. Please, read this series.
Synopses & Reviews
In the near future, America's worst nightmare has come true. With military adventurism overseas bogging down the Army and National Guard, the U.S. government mistakenly neglects the very real threat of anti-establishment militias scattered across the 50 states. Like a sleeping giant, Middle America rises up and violently pushes its way to the shining seas, coming to a standstill at the line in the sand — Manhattan or, as the world now knows it, the DMZ.
"Wood's depiction of a war-ravaged Manhattan spares nothing — the horrors, the brutality, and the senselessness of war are clearly depicted." School Library Journal
"Wood's writing does justice to the intriguing concept, and Burchielli's jagged artwork effectively conveys the characters' desperation." Booklsit
