Publisher Comments:

For centuries mystical creatures of all description were gathered into a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite.

Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep relative order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken — Seth is a bit too curious and reckless for his own good — powerful forces of evil are unleashed, and Kendra and her brother face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world, Kendra and Seth must find the courage to do what they fear most.

Synopsis:

I LOVED this series and proceeded to pass it along to adults and children alike. Akin to Harry Potter, Fablehaven involves a smart young girl named Kendra and her act first, think second little brother Seth. While visiting their Grandparents they discover a magical world that always existed but they could never see before. Suddenly Kendra and Seth must keep their wits about them as their lives become full of centaurs, fairies, unicorns, trolls, you name it! Book one involves Kendra and Seth being forced to bargain with a sneaky witch, who takes advantage of their ignorance to this new world. Can Kendra and Seth undo the damage they have caused? Read to find out! Such a fun story!!

Fablehaven is a magical preserve for magical creatures and well hidden from the public. When the caretaker of Fablehaven is pressed into service as caretaker of his grandchildren, they soon figure out that it is not a normal place. But how much will Kendra and her little brother, Seth, discover? And are the risks of knowing too much worse, than the risk of not knowing what exactly is going bump in the night?

This entire book felt like an elaborate rip-off of the Spiderwick Chronicles. I kept thinking, "yep, read that scene" as I went. I won't even bother listing what disappointed me, I'll just mention the one thing I liked: The writing wasn't half bad, and I liked the use of sayings that aren't overused in fantasy lit. The descriptive writing was very well done, and I could imagine the scenes vividly without the descriptions killing the pacing.
