Dr. Pellinore Warthrop and his apprentice, Will Henry, travel from the bleak Canadian wilderness to the streets of New York City while attempting to determine what — man, myth, or monster — is responsible for a string of murders. The deaths are unfailingly horrific and graphic (with much flaying of skin, plucking of eyes, and removing of faces), and Will and his mentor suffer physically and emotionally throughout, grappling as much with the belief systems at the core of their beings as they do with the alleged wendigo (a North American equivalent to a vampire, neither of which Warthrop believes exists) that is thought to be responsible. The development of the relationship between hapless Will and the demanding monstrumologist is the most rewarding aspect of the story; as Warthrop clings to his scientific bedrock as loved ones die and his very profession is threatened, Will also clings &mash; to a diminishing sense of his own humanity. About the Author

Rick Yancey is the author of The Monstrumologist and The Curse of the Wendigo. He has also written the award-winning series The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp, as well as several novels for adults including The Highly Effective Detective and A Burning in Homeland. His memoir, Confessions of a Tax Collector, was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the five best books on taxes ever written. He earned a BA in English from Roosevelt University in Chicago, and worked as a field officer for the Internal Revenue Service before turning to writing full-time in 2004. Rick lives in Florida with his wife Sandy and two sons.

The Curse of the Wendigo is the second book in the Monstrumologist series by Rick Yancey. While there are not many frightening moments in this book as there was in the first, we get to see a more in depth version of the characters. Fleshing them out more and making them seem more real. The Doctor and Will travel to Canada in search of a missing friend amidst horrible tales of the Wendigo and dropping temperatures. The Doctor believes nothing of the stories even though something hunts them on their quest to save a friend. Will they make it? Even at a slower pace this book is engaging and in my opinion gives a bit of a hint at what will happen in the third book. The writing is brilliant, and spellbinding even at its most grisliest. If you enjoyed the first book no doubt you will enjoy The Curse of the Wendigo.
