Young Wataru Mitani's life is a mess. His father has abandoned him and his mother has been hospitalized after a suicide attempt. Desperately he searches for some way to change his life — a way to alter his fate.

To achieve his goal, he must navigate the magical world of Vision, a land filled with creatures both fierce and friendly. And to complicate matters, he must outwit a merciless rival from the real world.

Wataru's ultimate destination is the Tower of Destiny where a goddess of fate awaits. Only when he has finished his journey and collected five elusive gemstones will he possess the Demons Bane — the key that will unlock his future.

Charity, bravery, faith, grace and the power of darkness and light: these are the provinces of each gemstone. Brought together, they have the immeasurable power to bring Wataru's family back together again.

Synopsis:

A young boy named Wataru enters a fantasy world in hopes of saving his parents marriage.

With a determined plan to reunite his mother and father, the 10-year-old boy knowingly enters a fantasy realm inhabited by a goddess who has the power to change destiny. With the help of the Lizard Boy, the Cat Girl, and the Fire-breathing Dragon, Wataru faces a series of seemingly insurmountable obstacles on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. One way or another, the young hero must reach the Tower of Destiny and bring his mother and father back together again.

I finished this book just two minutes before sitting down to type this. I agree with the other reviewer; this is the type of book where you genuinely miss the characters after reading the last page. I had no idea what to expect from this story, but it took me on a much grander adventure than anticipated. It's a story about loss, about courage, about family, about imagination, and about being true to oneself. But it's so much more.

This is the type of book that you miss the characters when you are finished. Even though it is marketed toward young adults, the themes, description and adventure would intice any age. Part Harry Potter, part Wrinkle in Time, it has many components of Children's classics but remains a classic within itself.
