The Percy Jackson series was recommended to me by very good friends: a couple and their then 11-year old son. I borrowed the books from the son and loved them so much! I put off reading the Heroes of Olympus series, partly because I didn't want to be disappointed that the first book, The Lost Hero, didn't feature him. I finally borrowed The Lost Hero and the Son of Neptune from the same friends, especially since my niece had read and loved that series. The Lost Hero was just a great as the Percy Jackson series even though Percy didn't appear in it! I am so amazed by Rick Riordan's imagination and ability to incorporate the Greek and Roman legends in a way that seems true to them while creating a very "modern" tale that is exciting to people of different ages.

I picked this book up when I found the "middle grades" book section at my local library. We'd read _The Lightning Thief_ to my kids for bedtime but I didn't personally read enough of it to follow the story, so this was really the first Riordan book I read. He does an exciting job of mixing Greek and Roman myths with the present day, although it's rather parochial (important sites for Greek gods, such as Olympus, moved west over time to the most important culture, and they are now in the USA). This book follows a five-book series about teen demigods who are based out of Camp Half-Blood, a camp on Long Island which provides the offspring of one Greek god and one human with a safe haven where monsters can't attack them. _The Lost Hero_ follows three new demigods, one of whom has amnesia and suspiciously Roman insignia, on a quest which starts a new book series. It was an exciting book and gave me enough information that I wasn't at a loss not having read the previous series. I also chose to pick up book 2 of the new series and I'm reading the previous series as well.
