In a Midwestern city, a killer plows through an unsuspecting crowd in a Mercedes, setting in motion a terrifying chain of events. Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes is a perfect summer read — page-turningly suspenseful, well-written, and unnervingly familiar.

Publisher Comments:

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Stephen King's third venture into the Crime Novel, the first two being Hard Case Crime editions of Joyland and The Colorado Kid, though this one leaves out any supernatural element. Mr. Mercedes is a fast paced story of retired, and sometimes suicidal, detective Bill Hodges still trying to solve the one unsolved case that eluded him, the case that slowly breathes new life into him. The antagonist, Brady Hartsfield, is a delusional psychotic that deliberately drove a stolen Mercedes into a crowd of job seekers killing eight and wounding so many more. But Brady wants more as he wages a psychological battle with Bill Hodges wanting to go out with a bang, killing many more than his first venture into mayhem. Along the way, DET RET Bill Hodges, as Brady aptly calls him, enlists unlikely allies in a seventeen year old kid and a middle aged woman. Stephen King, best known for his characterizations, breathes a craziness into the character that you want to hate, while breathing life into characters that you want to root for, to see succeed and triumph over evil; fully knowing that not all might make it to the finish line. Quick twists and turns and an unexpected death lure the reader to an exciting conclusion, one that you won't see coming until it smacks you in the face!

I have always been a Stephen King fan, except for the really gruesome few that I started and put down. This book kept me reading from the first words on, and although there are a few gruesome parts and some ripe language, it was engaging and a great thrill ride to the end. As usual, I was in awe of his way with characterization and his ability to forge a novel that you can't put down. Highly recommended!

If you like aliens, cats that come back to life, or creepy clowns, this is not the book for you. If you love well-written King books, it is. If you enjoyed Shawshank, Stand By Me, and ect., this book will make you happy. 11/22/63 was good, but still used the supernatural to move the story, and here it's just people. I think King is at his best when he uses the characters that always feel real.

Enjoy a good story? Tired of the usual crap? Read this.
