Synopses & Reviews
"This wondrous tale is brilliantly matched by Lynch's elegant yet accessible watercolors. . . .The best edition now available. Bravo!" —KIRKUS REVIEWS (pointered review)
A beloved Norwegian folktale, EAST O' THE SUN AND WEST O' THE MOON is the romantic story of a bewitched prince and the determined lassie who loves him. It has everything a classic epic tale should have: rags and riches, hags and heroism, magic and mystery, a curse and a quest, wicked trolls, a shape-shifting bear, and finally, a happy ending. Kate Greenaway Medalist P.J. Lynch has created a luminous backdrop worthy of this grand adventure, transporting readers to a world of fantasy and imagination.
With an authoritative Introduction by children's historian Lewis joining Sir George Webbe Dasent's classic translation of these Norwegian tales, this is a very magical book indeed. Full color.
About the Author
P.J. Lynch read this story many years before he thought to illustrate it. "In order to get the scenery and costumes right," he says, "I went to Norway and spent time at their National Gallery." The illustrator was also fortunate enough to have a friend who didnt mind being a model for the witches in the story. P.J. Lynch has illustrated many award-winning books, including THE BEE-MAN OF ORN, THE CHRISTMAS MIRACLE OF JONATHAN TOOMEY, GRANDAD'S PRAYERS OF THE EARTH, IGNIS, and WHEN JESSIE CAME ACROSS THE SEA. He lives in Dublin, Ireland.
