Book News Annotation:

Elegantly produced (fine paper, printing, and binding) as befits the contents, this volume showcases books that are masterfully created through refined collaboration. Livres d'artistes are books in which the contributions of writer, artist, and publisher are so closely intermeshed that the results are works of art themselves. The emphasis on the collaboration is what distinguishes these books from artists' books. Published in conjunction with a Grolier Club exhibition (May-July 2011), this volume presents 77 books spanning a 100-year period, each showcased with a spread from the book itself and commentary. Commentary and editorial work are the efforts of Jerry Kelly, a New York-based independent designer, calligrapher, and printer; Riva Castleman (emeritus, MoMA); and Anne H. Hoy (art history, New York U.). The volume is oversize: 9.5x13". Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
