"While most vegan cookbooks are anemic, underfed volumes-some no-brainer pasta recipes, a few things to do with tofu, maybe some oddball desserts-this slam-bang effort from vegan chefs Moskowitz and Romero (Vegan with a Vengeance) is thorough and robust, making admirable use of every fruit and vegetable under the sun, without once asking readers to make do with fake meat products and egg replacements. Instead, the eccentric authors offer dozens of novel, delicious ways to get excited about eating meat-, dairy- and egg-free. I asked my thirty-something California vegan niece which cookbook to buy for a recently-declared vegan friend, and she recommended Veganomicon. She says it has so many recipes it would take a lifetime to try and make them all.

I am not a vegan. I am not even a vegetarian. But this is the cookbook that I use more than any other in my collection.

I know! It surprised me, too!

Needless to say, if you're a vegetarian or you regularly cook for a vegetarian, you need this book. But if you're looking to increase whole grains or vegetables in your diet, or just broaden your culinary horizons, you totally need this cookbook. Think home cooking takes a lot of time? There's recipes clearly marked with prep times of 15 and 30 minutes. Hate tofu? It's a valid lifestyle choice, and there are over a hundred recipes in the Veganomicon that don't use it.

There is a good section on pantry staples and basic cooking techniques, but the part I've found the most useful is the desserts section. When you cannot be sure of allergies and dietary preferences at a gathering, the Veganomicon offers gluten-free dessert options that ensures everyone gets a tasty treat.

I love this book! Although some may be put off by the very few pictures in this volume, if you're a real cook you will appreciate the amazing variety and sheer number of recipes included in this valuable reference guide to vegan cooking. Need to know how to make a basic vegan gravy? It's here. Need to wow someone with a fabulous dessert? That's here too.

The authors have put in their time in the vegan world, and it shows. The recipes are original and reliable, and if you like this one, definitely try Isa's other cookbooks. They are always fun - the attitude is refreshing and the recipes WORK.
