Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Celebrated transsexual trailblazer Kate Bornstein has, with more humor and spunk than any other, ushered us into a world of limitless possibility through a daring re-envisionment of the gender system as we know it.

Here, Kate bravely and wittily shares personal and unorthodox methods of survival for navigating an often cruel world. A one-of-a-kind guide to staying alive outside the box, Hello, Cruel World is a much-needed unconventional approach to teenage suicide prevention for marginalized youth who want to stay on the edge, but alive.

Hello, Cruel World features a catalog of 101 Alternatives to Suicide that range from the playful (Moisturize), to the irreverent (Disbelieve the Binary), to the highly controversial (Get Laid. Please). Designed to encourage readers to give themselves permission to unleash their hearts’ harmless desires, the book has only one directive: "Don’t be mean." It is this guiding principle that brings its reader on a self-validating journey, which forges wholly new paths toward a resounding decision to choose life.

Tenderly intimate and unapologetically edgy, Kate is the radical role model, the affectionate best friend, and the guiding mentor all in one kind and spirited package.

A celebrated pioneer for the LGBTQI community, transsexual author and performance artist, Kate Bornstein is the author of the wildly successful books My Gender Workbook and Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and The Rest of Us.

Synopsis:

Perhaps you have had one of those moments where you thought maybe life wasn't worth continuing? Or perhaps you have known someone who was in so much pain that dying was a better alternative. Maybe you work with someone who has felt like this, or you work with folks who potentially could. Very few books address suicide in the authentic and honest way that Bornstein does. She has the ability to connect with the reader, particularly because ze is real, and unlike many others, does not convince the reader that suicide is bad, or a shameful thing. She reminds the reader that life is changing, and moments are fleeting, and in the midst of pain we sometimes forget that. At those moments, suicide looks like a real option. Instead of telling the reader life is a gift, or the source of pain will pass, she recognizes people are in pain and that ultimately every life is valuable. She challenges the reader to do something else to make sure they stay alive because "the world needs more kind people in it, no matter who or what they are, or do."

It is that message that carries throughout the book, and has the ability to make the reader connected to at least one thing. Additionally, Bornstein has a website to offer in conjunction with the book, and provides links to resources in addition to hotlines. Highly recommended!

With 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws, Kate Bornstein offers a brave, heartfelt, and truly helpful resource for hangers-on of all ages everywhere. I wish I had this book years ago. Even now, her words are palpable and practical. It's clear that Kate has been through hell and thankfully, she's offering guidance for those who follow. An invaluable book for every person struggling with life.
