Publisher Comments:

The only complete guide to flatwater canoe and kayak routes in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington — now completely updated!

Phillip Jones has been exploring the Northwest by canoe and kayak for more than 20 years, and presents his favorite outings in this completely revised guide to paddling the flat-water rivers and lakes of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Most of these trips can be done in a day, although some can be combined for longer journeys. For each trip, you'll find complete information on where to launch, trip rating, distance, best time to go, points of interest, hazards, portages, and more.

You'll find outings on the Willamette River and its tributaries, Oregon coastal rivers, the Columbia Gorge and the lower Columbia River, the Oregon Cascades, and southwest Washington. There are also tips on canoe and kayak paddling techniques, safety techniques, what to do if you capsize, transporting boats, and shuttling cars.

Book News Annotation:

Clear line maps and some b&w photos supplement the thorough descriptions of 74 paddle routes (eight are new to this edition). This is a guide that's had time to mature as the first edition was published in 1982, under the title Canoe Routes: Northwest Oregon; the second edition was published in 1997. Jones is a Portland-based outdoor enthusiast, and his book is carefully assembled. An introductory chapter offers tips on selecting canoes and kayaks, paddling technique, safety, and car shuttles, among other topics. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (

Great book. I've been using the various editions for years and have had a great time doing most of the trips in them. None of them are whitewater, there are other books for that. Some of the trips have fast water with riffles. Pass on these in winter if the rivers are in flood stage. Some trips on the Columbia can be challenging if the wind and waves are up. Happy paddling!

This book has everything you need to plan a safe and enjoyable kayak or canoe voyage. The 75 routes listed are all within 2 hrs driving of Portland and include information of where to begin and end, aproximate distance and time, and good lunch spots. Also included are what time of year is best for route, whether or not you need a parking or forest service pass and which routes should be reserved for more experienced paddlers. It also gives tips about which routes are not safe during hunting season (always important information in Oregon)!
