Publisher Comments:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Amazing Grace, a groundbreaking biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the greatest heroes of the twentieth century, the man who stood up to Hitler.

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism.

After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double-agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Fuhrer, and was hanged in Flossenberg concentration camp at age 39. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the 20th century.

Bonhoeffer presents a profoundly orthodox Christian theologian whose faith led him to boldly confront the greatest evil of the 20th century, and uncovers never-before-revealed facts, including the story of his passionate romance.

One of the most moving and encouraging books I've ever read. A man of great faith and enormous courage, Bonhoeffer is presented with insightful warmth and understanding by his biographer, Eric metaxas. The message is for all men in all times when up against evil as brutal, vicious, insidious as Hitler and the Nazis in the mid-20th century.

My father was the go-to man for information on World War 2, and I inherited his enthusiasm for the history of that time period particularly. But this book opened my eyes to what was really going on behind the facade the Nazis presented to the rest of the world, some of which wasn't known until many years after the end of the War. I found this book's contents challenging my own relatively secure life with what can happen when there is a thirst for absolute control (our country is not immune to this threat). But it also showed the boldness and zeal that can be found in one's giving himself fully to the will of the Lord, though risking everything, to be used as a tool in His hands to bring relief and comfort to so many. I highly recommend this book!

An extremely well-researched and engrossing book. Metaxas weaves anecdotes, theology, historical background, and surprising details of Bonhoeffer's life into this rather lengthy book. A highly-recommended read.
