Miri lives on a mountain where, for generations, her ancestors have quarried stone and lived a simple life. Then word comes that the king's priests have divined her small village the home of the future princess. In a year's time, the prince himself will come and choose his bride from among the girls of the village. The king's ministers set up an academy on the mountain, and every teenage girl must attend and learn how to become a princess.

Miri soon finds herself confronted with a harsh academy mistress, bitter competition among the girls, and her own conflicting desires to be chosen and win the heart of her childhood best friend. But when bandits seek out the academy to kidnap the future princess, Miri must rally the girls together and use a power unique to the mountain dwellers to save herself and her classmates.

Imagine yourself as a 14 year old girl who has lived in the small village of a Mt. Eskel all your life, when you hear that a Prince is going to select a girl from you're village to become his princess. Well this is exactly what Miri experiences in the book, Princess Academy. To be concise, everyone in the village is constantly working, except for Miri. Because of this, she feels left out but she is still very close to her father and sister while favoring her best friend named Peder. Unexpectedly, on an ordinary day a messenger from the King came to announce that in a year the Prince will come to their village, and a princess from Mt. Eskel will be chosen. But in order for a girl to be picked, they will all attend a "Princess Academy" to learn the ways of noblewomen. Who ever the prince chooses at the end of the year will be the princess. Miri will meet many new girls and learn new things with the help of a mean teacher. In the end, unexpected events will occur and many surprises will form as you read. A preview later in the book: "She kicked and screamed and tried to get her teeth into his hand, but she was so small and her attacker so strong. He carried her back to the academy writhing under his arm and dumped her on the floor of the bedchamber." I believe that the author's intended age group varies from young teen to young adult (around 13-20), but it could be fairly enjoyable for older readers if you love reading about how people go through challenges and friendships. While reading this I felt very interested in the text, and I feel like it is a well thought out story with balanced details. If you find teamwork, action, friendship, and secrets appealing, then "Princess Academy," by Shannon Hale would be a great book for you!
