Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Make nature an integral part of the classroom! With rising childhood obesity rates and childrens heavy use of electronics, the need for quality time in nature is greater than ever. Put away gadgets, turn off screens, and discover all that the natural world has to offer.

Celebrate Nature! is filled with hands-on activities to revive childrens connections with nature. Each seasonal section—autumn, winter, spring, and summer—introduces seven themes with countless ways to integrate nature into the classroom. Chapters encourage reflection of your own memories of the seasons and provide activities that address science and discovery, math, blocks and building, language arts, reading, writing, dramatic play, art, and music. Also included are sample letters and suggested at-home activities to support family participation in this important learning.

Angela Schmidt Fishbaugh is a pre-kindergarten teacher and certified K–12 art teacher. She leads workshops and seminars focused on the topics of balance, wellness, and educating today's youth.

Book News Annotation:

For each of the four seasons, Fishbaugh, a primary school teacher, presents seven sets of simple activities for ages 3-8, requiring minimal supplies. Each set of activities explores a specific theme, such as fall leaves, animal tracks, and honeybees. Each theme includes ideas for exploring outside, role play, and ideas for activities and discussions in the classroom related to science, math, blocks and building, reading, writing, dramatic play, art, music, and ideas for closing the theme. Each theme also includes original song lyrics for reinforcing the main ideas of activities, sung to the tunes of familiar melodies children already know. There are also ideas for involving families in similar activities at home, supported by sample parent letters and lists of suggestions for parents. The book is illustrated with b&w photos. Fishbaugh holds a master's degree in education and has 16 years of experience in the field of psychodrama. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
