Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Rousing pulp action and steampunk come together in a heartbreaking story of high adventure and alternate history. In the year 1870, a horrible plague of vampires swept over the northern regions of the world. It is now 2020 and a bloody reckoning is coming. Princess Adele is heir to the Empire of Equatoria, a remnant of the old tropical British Empire. When she becomes the target of a merciless vampire clan, her only protector is the Greyfriar, a mysterious hero who fights the vampires from deep within their territory. Their dangerous relationship plays out against an approaching war to the death between humankind and the vampire clans. The first book in a trilogy of high adventure and alternate history. Combining rousing pulp action with steampunk style, the Vampire Empire series brings epic political themes to life within a story of heartbreaking romance, sacrifice, and heroism.

Review:

"Griffith and Griffith, perhaps best known for their media tie-in work, merge vampires with steampunk in this tale of derring-do and star-crossed romance. In 1870 the vampires rose up and conquered the northern lands of Earth. The northern elites fled south to new colonies, leaving their subjects to the mercy of the predators. By 2020, the world is still divided. Princess Adele of the Equatorian Empire becomes the catalyst of the final human — vampire war when she is lost in vampire territory with only a mysterious adventurer known as the Greyfriar to help her. Set in a future that is comfortably quaint, where brass-plated technology is uninhibited by plausibility and the northern exiles may feel oppressed but the indigenous equatorial peoples never do, this melodramatic tale is fast-paced and entirely unchallenging. I love this book. The world that Susan and Clay created is awesome, the alternate world of mankind. Man vs vampires. The drive that the heroine have is clearly defined by their actions. The mysterious good doer Greyfriar with a big secret, and Adelle who had her eyes opened by something unexpected. Lots of action, and excitement. The story really pulls you with with the dedication to their cause and each other. A very un-likely pair, and that's what makes it awesome!!

Greyfriar is by far the 2010 title that moved me the most emotionally. It rates up there among the action adventure titles too since the suspence and combat action was there is spades too but it was the true to reality emotion that made the story the best. Clay and Susan have a real live and affection for their subject matter - alternate victoriana, steampunk and vampires returning all those memes to things I look forward to. They imagined a dark world and populated it with bright spots that I long for more of. They gave me heroes to cheer for and predatory villains to love to hate. Top that with the fact that I cried real tears at the end and take the book everywhere still a were later. Loved the book.
