Publisher Comments:

It has been estimated that for fifteen thousand years Oregon has been a home to many people and their cultures. However, in the one hundred years since the arrival of Western settlers, the traditions, ways, languages, and legacies of the first Oregonians have almost been extinguished. Thus, in a collaborative effort with the Commission on Indian Services, representatives of the nine federally recognized tribal communities and scholars from several Oregon universities, the Oregon Council for the Humanities developed The First Oregonians, the only comprehensive, fully illustrated account of Oregon's native people.
