Slut!: Growing Up Female with a Bad Reputationby Leora Tanenbaum
Synopses & Reviews
Leora Tanenbaum's Slut! is a groundbreaking account of the lives of young women who stand up to the destructive power of namecalling, written by one of the rising young talents of journalism today. Slut! seamlessly weaves together three narrative threads: powerful oral histories of girls and women who tell us their stories and how they finally overcame sexual labeling, Leora's own story, and her cogent analysis of the underlying problem of sexual stereotyping.
Based on the author's confessional article in an issue of "Seventeen" magazine about her experiences of being called a "slut" in high school--as well as the first-hand accounts of other women ages 14 through 66--"Slut" offers "a bracing corrective for any young woman who finds herself at the mercy of the double standard" (Susan Faludi). Illustrations.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 265-278) and index.
