Lillian Bloom, November 28, 2014 (view all comments by Lillian Bloom)
The experienced authors: Seike, Kudō and Engel have made a comprehensive, practical, well photographed and clearly explained guide to creating a Japanese garden for western gardeners.
Each type of garden; i.e., 'Courtyard Garden', 'Stone Garden', is fully explained, then shown in both photographs and layout diagrams. The design principles are clearly explained; for example, the garden's role as symbolizing nature using a,"'grammatical' structure" that the gardener "lays-in".
The Layout sections deal with stone placement, stone group arrangement in photos and diagrams. The design, location and 'how to' of Water Features and Stone Lanterns are each practically discussed with clear below/above ground diagrams and photos. The importance of using plants that do well in your local climate is stressed. There is a comprehensive plant list along with diagrams and instructions for constructing different types of bamboo fences. This slender 80 page book is a rich, detailed yet concise resource for the gardener aspiring to grow a Japanese garden.
