Although the book was originally written specifically for the construction of such systems in Nepal, most of the principles presented here are applicable in a great variety of locations around the world. Efforts have been made to organize the material for quick reference, and to present it in a manner that allows overseers form both engineering and non-engineering backgrounds to understand it quickly and easily. The author emphasizes the fundamental principles of design, illustrated with several general examples of successful structures, rather than presenting strict and inflexible 'standarized designs'. Given the ruggedness of many developing areas in need of gravity-flow water systems, it is his belief that standarized designs may not always be perfectly feasible but that someone who understands the principles of the designs can modify them to fit the location.
