Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:The purpose of this little book is to introduce the reader to a phase of model craft that has a peculiar fascination, although it is in a sense secondary to the construction of ship models.
Frequently a very shapely hull equipped with admirable machinery is ruined by deck equipment, with fittings grossly out of scale or completely lacking in character. This is not always the fault of the model-maker, because it is often very difficult to ascertain the exact nature and shape of all the important fittings which should be shown on a really good working model. Within the limits of space imposed by the modest size of this book it is impossible to illustrate and describe every fitting that might be required on a steamship, nor would such an exhaustive treatment be of any great value either to the practical ship modeller or to the novice. The reason is not far to seek: because it is impracticable to represent every tiny part on a working model. What should be aimed at is to select and model only those fittings needed to impart a sense of realism and completeness, qualities which are most readily realised by thoughtful placing and selection of a few well-made fittings. In the pages of this book an attempt is made to help the novice to improve his product and secure a measure of characteristic realism in his ship-model fittings.
