Publisher Comments:

In September 2000, urban designer and self-proclaimed anti-architect David Greenberg launched an international competition to solicit innovative, ecologically sound treehouse designs for implementation as hotels at far-flung resorts in Hawaii, China, Vietnam, and Fiji. Nearly 500 architects responded. This book compiles the top designs, chosen by an esteemed panel of judges.

One look at the fantastic structures presented here makes it clear this isn't Swiss Family Robinson territory: These treehouses are pure flights of fancy, many of which might fit in on the set of a science-fiction film, but at the same time they are ecological and make use of indigenous materials. Floor plans, computer-generated renderings, elevation plans, and scale models appear with the wildly creative designs, along with descriptive essays by the architects, bringing these high-tech, low-cost structures to life and giving readers a look into an environmentally-friendly architectural future that is already present.

Book News Annotation:

This book showcases 98 designs from a juried contest, initiated by the author from September 2000 to January 2001, for designs of ecological treehouses for tropical island resorts in Fiji, Vietnam, China, and Maui. Each design is presented with a description and color illustrations and plans. The ten finalist designs are further described with remarks from the jury of architects, artists, and a Zen Buddhist monk. Greenburg is a consultant on eco-resort projects around the world and has built treehouses in Hawaii (available to travellers).
